Rome conquered Greece in 146 BCE, turning it into a province called Achaea. Greek cities lost political sovereignty, becoming subject to Roman governors and law.

Many Greeks lived under heavy taxation, military occupation, and many were taken as slaves.

Epictetus himself was born a slave in the household of Epaphroditus, a powerful Roman official. Even Though he was enslaved, he studied Stoic philosophy, eventually gaining his freedom and becoming a globally renowned teacher.

Epictetus’ entire life embodied: yes crushing circumstances, but still built an unconquerable unlimited mind!
